Main Goal

To respond to the plant health and phytopathology needs of Vilmorin-Mikado and Limagrain Vegetable Seed (LVS) in Mexico, we seek to develop a platform for plant pathology testing in Culiacán (MEX). The main focus includes organizing and planning routine tests, sampling for pathogens in different areas, interacting with farmers for external testing, and collaboration with local station personnel.

The Phytopathology Laboratory Technician will organize and perform the phytopathological tests established for the three LVS BUs. In addition, in collaboration with the person in charge of the Phytopathology Platform, it will carry out activities related to research on ongoing projects, and the study of new and emerging diseases.

Job description

This is a challenging position that involves transferring an existing plant pathology research activity to a new location and being part of a new team with the help of your direct supervisor, the local station manager, and the LVS pathology community.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Organize and carry out phytopathology tests: scheduling, preparation of media and inoculant, inoculation, supervision of greenhouses and monitoring of trials.

• Provide diagnostic support for the local team of geneticists and the sales / marketing team in Mexico.

• Guarantee good health conditions in the planted plants, the evaluated crops, and the insect population.

• Collect, isolate, maintain and preserve strains of pathogens (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes) using the appropriate microbiology techniques.

• Execute the evaluation protocols in accordance with the procedures established to guarantee the quality of the results.

• Participate in maintaining the organization of the laboratory and follow good laboratory and phytosanitary practices.

• Directly manage workers and other application technicians by developing clear activity planning with the help of your supervisor.

• Work closely with local partners: geneticists, crop workers, and local station manager.

• Develop and implement protocols to evaluate emerging diseases according to the priority of the Phytopathology laboratory manager.

• Conduct research to develop new and improved test methods as requested by your supervisor.

• Document and report on the activities, procedures, and results of plant pathology tests.

• Possible national and international trips will be required.


• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Agronomy or related, with a specialty in plant pathology and proven experience in the seed industry.

• Previous experience in practical phytopathology tests and statistical analysis.

• Good written and verbal communication in Spanish. Able to communicate in English.

• Previous experience / knowledge in tests with insects and nematodes will be valued.



To perform the job successfully, a candidate must demonstrate the following competencies:

Strategic planning and analysis: ability to organize and manage simultaneous tests considering the results. Anticipate and take the initiative to plan and carry out the necessary tasks to satisfy the main client (Geneticists).

Technical Skills - Direct experience in the execution of phytopathology tests. Required experience in handling laboratory equipment, understanding of molecular biology methods, and a solid background in microbiology. Knowledge of statistical analysis, computing, and database maintenance. Excellent ability to organize data log files and folders. Openness and rapid learning to receive technical training on the management of new pathogens.

Interpersonal skills: Effective oral and written communication. Ability to work and communicate with all levels of organization of a multinational company. Clarity to provide weekly and monthly reports to your supervisor.

Teamwork: team player with a positive attitude. Ability to facilitate teamwork between staff and local team. Ability to build trust with all functional areas within the organization, especially with the operating station manager and local breeding teams / geneticists.

Professionalism: highly motivated individual with strong organizational skills. Results oriented. Focused and motivated to meet deadlines. You must possess a great sense of integrity.
