Job description



PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
As a member of the breeding team, contribute to our Solanaceous breeding programs (tomato and pepper) through data preparation and analysis to implement genomic selection. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to predictive breeding / genomic selection implementation in commercial breeding programs, and work with cutting edge tools to deliver selection efficiencies and robust product pipelines. The position is available immediately but has a flexible start date for the right candidate. It can vary in duration from 3-9 months duration, with preferred location in our Davis, California research hub.

Duties and responsibilities:
This position will participate in breeding activities in select Solanaceous Breeding Programs, with a focus on:
- Historical data preparation/entry for genomic selection
- Upload of historical phenotypic data into breeding database
- Contribute to phenotypic data collection in ongoing breeding trials
- Data QC, trial quality assessment and basic data exploration/analysis around traits
- Organize genotypic data for downstream analysis
- Assess the efficiency of genomic selection to increase genetic gain and estimate breeding values to predict new hybrid combinations and breeding start insights
- Ability to communicate results from data analysis with clarity to expert and non-expert audiences
- Collaborate across functions with breeders, geneticists, and data scientists to enable the implementation of genomic selection

Required knowledge & Skills
- Experience with data analysis and management
- Understanding of quantitative genetics, statistics, and plant breeding
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Expertise with statistical models and applications to genetics and plant breeding (e.g. mixed models, BLUP, GWAS, GS)
- Strong computer skills and advanced MS Excel skills
- Ability to learn in-house analytical modules for data analysis
- Expedience coding in R is preferred

Work experience and education required:
- Enrolled in BSc science program, within 1 year of completion. Enrollment in MS/PhD program preferred.
- Preferred fields of study: Quantitative Genetics, Horticulture, Agronomy, Crop Sciences, Plant Sciences, Biology
- Pro-active, engaged and creative
- Excellent communication skills and ability to quickly learn new processes
