Main Goal

Purpose

This position is responsible for performing tasks to support the tomato breeding program such as sowing, transplanting, crop maintenance, phytosanitary sanitation, fruit harvesting, phenotypic evaluation, record keeping, and seed extraction. Activities will be performed at the Vilmorin-Mikado Mexico Experiment Station in Culiacan, Mexico.

 

Job description

Primary Functions

·         Learn and follow protocols established by the tomato breeding program and according to company polices.

·         Assist in nursery, nethouse, and open field plant care for tomato breeding projects including seed sowing, phytosanitary sanitation, fruit harvest, and seed extraction.

·         With support from the Farm Manager, maintain seedlings in the nursery and plants in the nethouse and open field according to the breeding team’s standards.

·         Support the execution, maintenance, evaluation, harvest, and seed extraction procedures for tomato trials.

·         Monitor pests and diseases in the nursery, nethouse, and open field. Report findings to the Tomato Assistant Breeder and Farm Manager.

·         Work with the Farm Manager and the Research Operations team on awareness of agrochemical applications at the station.

·         Assist the Tomato Assistant Breeder on seed inventory management, organization, and record keeping.

·         Support Research Operations with trial establishment and with the end of cycle cleaning and maintenance.

·         Maintain a well organized work area (clean and neat).

·         Assist with evaluations, record keeping, and data entry.

·         Work in accordance with company safety  and phytosanitary policies.

·         Operate greenhouse and laboratory equipment in a safe manner.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 Set up breeding nurseries and pollination crossing blocks designed by the breeder.

VI.     Qualifications

·         Knowledge of basic horticulture and/or plant breeding.

·         An interest in learning horticultural plant breeding skills.

·         Ability to perform with strong emphasis on detail and accuracy.

·         Good communication skills and ability to work well with others.

·         Willingness to work in diverse conditions indoors and outdoors.

·         Computer experience and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 software.

Ability to conduct high quality work.
